This setting is a catastrophe. The physics of the main premise, the fact that there are two suns and one eclipses the other once in a while, doesn't actually seem to work at all. Even if it could work, then the plotting based around that event is still nonsense, because either 1) this happens so infrequently that there are so many generations between this event occurring that it's impossible for it to happen again within any of the characters' lifetimes, or 2) this happens frequently enough that there is some history of the event happening, so it can't possibly catch everyone by surprise. However, the plot revolves around both of these at once: the eclipse came as a surprise and no one knew what was going on, but the next one is going to come so soon that people are scrambling to try to take political advantage of it. You can't have it both ways. In this multiple crisis, the young Reacher already displays both the sharp detective ability and the fighting prowess which will characterise him as a grown-up. Moreover, while just 13 years old, he displays enough self-confidence and force of personality to make a detail of grown-up military policemen follow through on the leads he offers them. Within a few hours, all problems are neatly tied up: the bully is sent to hospital with several broken ribs, his reign of terror at a definite end; Joe is completely cleared of the charge of cheating; the missing code book is duly recovered, with Stan cleared of any responsibility for its having gone astray; and Reacher is rewarded by getting to kiss Helen.

I really liked the journey that Dirk took in this. He changed a lot from the boy he was in the beginning of the book and I look forward to seeing where his character goes from here. There were so many tense moments and I read through the last half of this book at lightning speed to see what happened next. This short story serves as an insight to Reacher's family history. The father was repeatedly resigned to different military posts in the world, forcing their family to reestablish and accommodate to their new lifestyle. Having moved countless times shows they are resilient and disciplined. At one time Reacher refers to his family as a "unit" because together they are loyal and loving to one another. This story showed how sometimes the people you thought you were the closest too can become your enemies while the people you thought were your enemies might be your best allies. It also shows that when people have chosen to put you into the game even by trying to not play you are playing. Having said that, the minds-eye visuality in Fallon's books grabs you immediately. But when the story really took off, after all the scene-setting, it honestly felt like a *bang* in my head. The 'light bulb' moment when you, as the reader, are almost... permitted... to view the end game, while still watching how the characters reach it. Suddenly I saw all the parts come together, and I started to second-guess at the parts that weren't quite making sense yet. But that is the brilliance of Fallon's novels: she leaves out just enough info to keep you hungering for more, while giving your mind a work out to discover the political and social machinations permeating her books.

I found quite a few elements of Fallon’s writing a little too similar to other fantasy authors I have read, although this could be due to fact that I have read so many fantasy books from many different authors. As such I was able to predict a substantial number of the events throughout Lion of Senet leaving little to surprise me. A tense, sinuous, fast-moving debut where hard answers are given to questions of honour and justice.’

Another Canadian Elliott, Elliott Barker, says of The Partial Psychopath: "For about half a century, we have known one unfailing recipe for creating psychopaths -- move a child through a dozen foster homes in the first three years." I wonder if it even requires foster families: could moving a child as frequently between military bases, even with a loving but emotionally stunted mother, have some of the same effect. The other major disappointment is the ending, which falls totally flat. It's almost as if Sailor either ran out of ideas and couldn't think of an ending, or that he was simply tired and wanted to be finished. It doesn't help that there is massive foreshadowing of a fireworks ending that simply never comes and leaves the reader extra disappointed.

Die Geschichte punktet hauptsächlich, durch die gut und nachvollziehbar beschriebenen Gewissenskonflikte der Protagonisten. He embraces it. Understands his philosophy implicitly, revels in his physical being, his conventions and values. He defends those he loves, those he does allow into his world, with a loyalty bar none while never letting go of the notion that he is alone and being perfectly comfortable with that. Turf wars, brutal killings and family loyalties, this book has it all. It is set in South West Sydney, in Liverpool, which is about 20 minutes from where I live. It was strange to have a book set so close home, I could see the streets and shops as the story was going along. Thankfully, this is a work of fiction as it is violent. I am sure it all happens, I just hope I never get caught up in it. Belagren, High Priestess of the Shadowdancers, is the human Voice of the Goddess, long thought to have brought forth the Age of Light.
